Zohran Mamdani Clinches Democratic Nomination for NYC Mayor

The New York City Board of Elections confirmed today that Zohran Mamdani has won the Democratic primary for mayor, officially securing his place on the November ballot. Mamdani, a previously little-known New York State Assembly member, surged ahead in the ranked-choice voting, ultimately capturing 56% of the vote in the third round—surpassing the 50% threshold needed to win. His victory marks a major upset and sets the stage for a high-profile showdown in the general election against incumbent Mayor Eric Adams.

Political Upstart to Challenge Eric Adams in General Election

Mamdani will now face Eric Adams, who, despite being elected as a Democrat in 2021, is running for re-election as an independent. Adams made the shift after being indicted on federal corruption charges earlier this year—a case that the Department of Justice has since dropped, though it left a shadow over his campaign.

Who is Zohran Mamdani

Born in Kampala, Uganda, to Indian parents and raised in New York City, Mamdani is a graduate of the NYC public school system. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Africana Studies from Bowdoin College. Naturalized as an American citizen in 2018, he previously worked as a foreclosure prevention housing counselor before being elected to represent the 36th Assembly District, which includes the neighborhoods of Astoria, Ditmars-Steinway, and Astoria Heights.
